What Does Professional Driveway Installation Include?
Professional driveway installation is the complete construction of a vehicle-grade surface — from excavation and drainage through to sub-base preparation, surface laying, edging, and finishing. It's engineered to support the weight of vehicles, resist weather damage, and maintain its appearance for decades.
Driveways are for homeowners who want a clean, functional entrance to their property that handles daily vehicle traffic without cracking, sinking, or flooding. Whether you're replacing an old tarmac drive, converting a front garden, or building from scratch on a new-build plot, professional installation is essential.
You need a new driveway when your current surface is cracked, potholed, sunken, or permanently puddle-covered. An aging driveway doesn't just look poor — it reduces your property's kerb appeal and can knock thousands off its market value.
Professional installation matters because driveways carry significantly more load than patios or paths. Vehicle weight, turning stress, and constant use require deeper sub-bases, stronger edging, and materials specifically rated for vehicular traffic. A driveway built to patio specification will fail within months.

Don't Wait Until It's Too Late
Why Your Cracked Driveway Is Costing You Money
Your driveway is the first thing anyone sees when they approach your home. A cracked, weedy, sunken driveway signals neglect — and estate agents consistently report that poor driveways reduce asking prices by 5–10%. On a £250,000 property, that's up to £25,000 in lost value.
Water is the biggest enemy of a failing driveway. Cracks allow rainwater to penetrate the sub-base, which softens, shifts, and creates more cracks. In winter, trapped water freezes, expands, and accelerates the damage. Each freeze-thaw cycle makes the problem exponentially worse.
Potholes and uneven surfaces damage vehicle suspension, tyres, and wheels. More critically, they're a trip hazard — and as the property owner, you're liable for any injury that occurs on your driveway. A single claim could cost far more than a new driveway installation.
Many homeowners try patching — filling cracks, adding loose gravel over failed surfaces, or overlaying thin tarmac. These are temporary fixes that mask the underlying problem. Within a year, the same issues return, and you've spent money on materials that need replacing anyway.
How It Works
Our Proven Driveways Process
Step 1
Free Site Assessment
We survey your driveway, check ground conditions, assess drainage requirements, and discuss surface options. You receive a detailed, fixed-price quote with no hidden costs.
Step 2
Design & Material Selection
We help you choose the right surface — block paving, resin-bound, tarmac, or gravel — based on your style, budget, and practical needs. We bring samples for you to compare.
Step 3
Excavation & Drainage
We excavate to the correct depth (typically 250–350mm), install drainage channels where needed, and lay a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base. This is the foundation that prevents future failure.
Step 4
Surface Installation
Your chosen surface is installed with precision — block paving laid to pattern, resin trowelled to a consistent finish, or tarmac machine-laid for smoothness. Edge restraints are concreted to prevent lateral spread.
Step 5
Completion & Handover
We clean the finished driveway, check levels and drainage performance, and walk you through aftercare. Your 5-year workmanship guarantee is confirmed in writing.

In-Depth
Driveways — What You Need to Know
Block Paving Driveways
Block paving is the most popular driveway surface in the Glasgow area. Individual blocks are laid in patterns (herringbone is the strongest for driveways) on a compacted sand bed over a MOT sub-base. Edge restraints hold everything in place, and kiln-dried sand fills the joints.
Block paving offers the widest range of colours, textures, and patterns. It can be laid in curves, circles, and borders to create a bespoke design. If a block is damaged, it can be individually replaced without disturbing the surrounding surface — a significant advantage over continuous surfaces.

Resin-Bound Driveways
Resin-bound surfacing mixes natural aggregate with clear UV-stable resin, which is trowelled onto a prepared base to create a smooth, permeable, weed-resistant surface. It's available in a wide range of natural stone colours and blends.
Resin-bound is SUDS-compliant (Sustainable Urban Drainage System), meaning it allows water to drain through the surface rather than running off. This is increasingly important as local authorities tighten regulations on front garden drainage. A resin-bound driveway doesn't require separate planning permission for this reason.

Tarmac Driveways
Tarmac (asphalt) remains a cost-effective, durable driveway option. Machine-laid tarmac provides a smooth, continuous surface that handles heavy traffic and requires almost no maintenance. It's the fastest surface to install and the most budget-friendly for larger driveways.
We use two-coat tarmac systems — a base course for strength and a wearing course for finish. Proper edging (kerbs or block borders) gives tarmac driveways a defined, professional appearance that elevates them above the basic look.

Drainage & Regulatory Compliance
Since 2009, converting a front garden to an impermeable surface (solid tarmac, non-permeable block paving) larger than 5 square metres requires planning permission unless the surface drains to a permeable area within your property.
We design every driveway with drainage in mind. Options include permeable block paving (which allows water through the joints), resin-bound surfacing (inherently permeable), or channel drains that direct water to soakaways or existing drainage. This keeps your installation compliant and prevents flooding.

Got Questions?
Frequently Asked Questions About Driveways
How much does a new driveway cost in Glasgow?
A standard single-car driveway (20–30 sqm) typically costs £3,000–£6,000 for block paving, £2,500–£5,000 for resin-bound, or £1,500–£3,000 for tarmac. Larger drives and premium materials cost more. We provide free, itemised quotes.
Which driveway material lasts longest?
Block paving and resin-bound both last 20–25+ years with minimal maintenance. Tarmac lasts 15–20 years. All options outlast gravel, which needs regular topping up.
How long does driveway installation take?
Most domestic driveways take 3–5 working days for block paving, 2–3 days for resin-bound, or 1–2 days for tarmac. We'll confirm the timeline in your quote.
Do I need planning permission for a new driveway?
Not if the surface is permeable (resin-bound, permeable block paving) or drains to a permeable area on your property. We design all driveways to be compliant, avoiding the need for planning applications.
Can you install a driveway on a slope?
Yes. We install driveways on gradients, incorporating drainage channels, textured surfaces for grip, and retaining edges where needed. Sloped driveways require more groundwork but perform well when built correctly.
Do you remove the existing driveway?
Yes. We excavate and dispose of old tarmac, concrete, gravel, and slabs as part of the project. Removal costs are included in your quote.
What sub-base depth do you use?
We use a minimum 200mm compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base for all driveways — deeper than patio installations because driveways must support vehicle weight. For heavy vehicles or poor ground, we increase this to 300mm.
Will my driveway sink over time?
Not if it's built correctly. Sinking occurs when sub-bases are too thin, poorly compacted, or laid on unsuitable ground. Our preparation process eliminates these risks.
What guarantee do you provide?
All driveway installations come with our 5-year workmanship guarantee covering the sub-base, surface, edging, and drainage.
Which areas do you cover?
We install driveways across Glasgow, Dumbarton, Clydebank, Paisley, Bearsden, Milngavie, Helensburgh, Bishopbriggs, Renfrew, Alexandria, Erskine, Kirkintilloch, and surrounding areas.
